CHANGE ME October 8, 2018
Worship is my life. I have surrendered to the ministry of worship at each church we have been attending for twelve years now. God has provided the exceptional opportunity to worship with some excellent worshipers, full of talent, full of giving hearts, full of love for the call and their Lord. I remember all the names, faces, and friendships from these great people all with one goal in mind, to serve the church and our King.
There was a time in my life, however, about 10 years ago, where serving was almost grueling, getting up early to be at church an hour and a half early to rehearse, with all that was happening in my family and home life during that time made it even more of a sluggish morning on those Sunday’s. Asking myself “why…” followed by the millions of fleshly questions that can follow unwillingness would fall into place. I was obedient in most respects, but I wasn’t doing so great in the willingness arena. Then one Sunday morning. The second I woke up and stood to begin once again my service to Him, He said this in my Spirit “MY drummer is up!” It was almost as if He was waiting on the edge of His throne to begin to interact with me, to hear me say my usual “Good morning Jesus”. I stopped in my tracks and did a real ‘Selah’ in that moment and realized this simple line of thinking.
Worship is never about me, what I can do, how well I do it, or what the song happens to be we are using to surrender to Him that day. It is a position I carry every day in my heart, which is posed to give glory only to the King. He chose me for this day, He is faithful to sustain all of it.
I must lean into His strength and let go of all the expectations I place on myself. It’s an
HONOR to serve and my thinking had gotten off track. He was excited, He was expecting, He had a plan for that day and I understood He needed to begin to orchestrate that plan in me first.
I needed to reposition my heart before I ever walked into that sanctuary for rehearsal that Sunday. It was precious that He, the God of all the universe would sit and wait by my bed for me to arise and contend with Him that day.
My heart was humbled that morning, it stopped being about me and what I thought about everything. After my usual “good morning Jesus” and His sweet typical, faithful answer back my prayer was exactly this; “Change me O God. Make me more like You…” I didn’t even know until this morning I was praying a prayer from Psalm 51, but HE did. He continues to answer that prayer because I pray this prayer almost daily, and especially when I get tripped up about something. I have never viewed serving Him as His drummer, the one whom He keeps, and sustains, and loves and OH He must love me above all my personality quirks too because it’s a BIG one and He is continuously carving and sculpting His image of me. I know as long as I stay surrendered, He will do a mighty thing in the Kingdom for His glory.
I found this song, which the Psalm is from and I am so thankful He chose me. He will continue His work in my life until I see His face. Until then, I have a job to do, and this morning He has repositioned my heart once again to a new perspective He has introduced in my life. He can take a terribly broken, willing to change the heart and create one of the most beautiful tools to be used to touch such a hurting world. That’s His focus, it’s not the music, it’s not the talent, it’s not the clothes… don’t get off track. True change happens on the inside first, this change is real.
The whole chapter of Psalm 51 is a perfect prayer, but especially vs. 10-12, are key for me.
Enjoy the video. Have a great week, I love you all.
A Prayer of Repentance PSALM 51
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David when Nathan the prophet went to him after he had gone into Bathsheba.
1 Have mercy upon me, O God,
According to Your lovingkindness;
According to the multitude of Your tender mercies,
Blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I acknowledge my transgressions,
And my sin is always before me.
4 Against You, You only, have I sinned,
And done this evil in Your sight—
That You may be found just [a]when You speak,
And blameless when You judge.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin my mother conceived me.
6 Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts,
And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Make me hear joy and gladness,
That the bones You have broken may rejoice.
9 Hide Your face from my sins,
And blot out all my iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence,
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.
13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
And sinners shall be converted to You.
14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
The God of my salvation,
And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth shall show forth Your praise.
16 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it;
You do not delight in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit,
A broken and a contrite heart—
These, O God, You will not despise.
18 Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion;
Build the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness,
With burnt offering and whole burnt offering;
Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar.
